Baichuan

Baichuan (Baichuan Intelligence) is a Beijing lab founded in April 2023 by Wang Xiaochuan, the search veteran behind Sogou. In the field's earliest open period it moved fastest: the Baichuan-7B and 13B releases of mid-2023 were among the first strong Chinese open weights, and Baichuan 2's fully documented technical report made it a standard research base before the Qwen and Llama ecosystems consolidated the niche.¹

Stated mission and record

Baichuan publishes no standalone English mission page, and its corporate site exposes little static text; the clearest statement of purpose on record is founder Wang Xiaochuan's all-staff letter marking the company's second anniversary, as reported in named press coverage: "为生命建模型、为人类造医生，是百川的使命" (reported; translated: "To build models for life and create doctors for humanity is Baichuan's mission").⁴ The same letter laid out a three-step path, "造医生-改路径-促医学" (translated: "create doctors, reform pathways, advance medicine"), and conceded that the earlier agenda, spanning general foundation models, a consumer assistant, and early commercialization, had stretched the organization too thin.⁴ No published charter or safety framework is on record; its official Hugging Face organization page lists its interests only as "AGI Large Language Models," and its GitHub profile carries no self-description.⁵

The record aligns with the restated mission in part. Consistent with it, the medical turn described below is reflected in continued open publication: the company's GitHub organization hosts Apache-licensed medical Baichuan-M repositories with updates into 2026.⁵ In tension with it, the healthcare mission was articulated in 2025, roughly two years after founding; Baichuan launched as a general-model contender among Chinese AI labs, and its early open 7B/13B releases gave way to closed API models before the pivot, so the stated mission describes the company's destination more than its origin; the letter itself, though, dates the medical ambition to day one, glossing the "bai" of Baichuan as a homophone of "bio."⁴ As of July 2026, its general-purpose frontier ambitions remain retired in favor of the medical focus, a repositioning Wang's letter frames as concentration rather than retreat.⁴

Model program

Baichuan 2 (September 2023) trained 7B and 13B models on 2.6 trillion tokens with an unusually complete disclosure of data processing and training dynamics, including released intermediate checkpoints, scientific practice ahead of its time among Chinese AI labs.¹ Baichuan 3 and 4 (2024) moved up-market through APIs with developer-reported MMLU-class results, and the company raised at unicorn valuations alongside fellow "AI tigers" Zhipu AI, Moonshot AI, MiniMax, StepFun, and 01.AI.²

The pivot

As frontier costs compounded, Baichuan narrowed to vertical depth: from 2024 it publicly reoriented around medical AI, aiming its models at diagnosis assistance, hospital deployments, and health applications, with founder statements framing healthcare as the domain where Chinese data advantages and procurement could sustain a startup. Reporting through 2025-2026 records executive turnover and the retreat of its general-purpose consumer ambitions, placing Baichuan with 01.AI in the consolidation chapter of the landscape rather than the frontier race led by DeepSeek and Moonshot AI.²³

Position

Its legacy is the early-open contribution: Baichuan bases populated academic fine-tuning papers through 2024, and its disclosure norms prefigured the open-report culture now standard across China's leaders. Current capability claims carry developer attribution per this wiki's rules.³
